これをきっかけに、「青森村」が誕生する。当時の開港奉行・森山蔵之介弥七郎（もりやまくらのすけやしちろう）が、藩主の津軽信枚（つがるのぶひら）に申し出て、許可された。
そのことに関して、『青森市の歴史』（青森市発行）には、次のように記されている。
「藩主の意をくみ弥七郎（やしちろう）は、米町（こめまち）に磯馴松（そなれまつ）が生えている小高い森があって、いつも青々として生い茂り、古来からこの森を青森と呼び、漁舟が帰るときの目標になっていたことから、この呼び名を新派立（しんはだち※）の村名にと申し出たところ、信枚はこの村名は末長く栄える良い名であると殊の外喜び、青森村と命名されることになった」（※派立とは、新しくつくられた村のこと）
それまでこの地は、「善知鳥村（うとうむら）」と呼ばれた一寒村であったが、この命名を契機に、津軽藩の威光と弥七郎の采配のもとで、港町として目覚ましい発展を遂げていくのである。
フェリー埠頭、かつての青函連絡船・八甲田丸（はっこうだまる）、オイルターミナルなど、青森市には今現在も、海運に関連する施設が種々存在する。
筆者も海辺近くに住んでいて、朝方、船の汽笛で目が覚めることが、たまにある。外へ出てみると、霧が立ち込めているのが常で、つまりその音は、海難防止のための霧笛なのである。
青森市に生まれ育った妻に、港町としての象徴は、と尋ねたところ、「船の汽笛かな」という答えが返ってきた。
ボォーーという超低音の響きは、聞く人の心の琴線に共鳴するのだろう。ましてやそれが、濃い潮の香を伴って漂ってくれば、なおさらである。

Aomori City - 400 years since the opening of the port
Aomori City's urban development began about 400 years ago in 162 5, the year the shogunate authorized the opening of the port.
This led to the birth of "Aomori Village. Yashichiro Moriyama Kuranosuke, the magistrate in charge of opening the port at that time, proposed to Nobuhira Tsugaru, the lord of the domain, and was granted permission.
The "History of Aomori City" describes this as follows
Yashichiro, following the wishes of the feudal lord, found a small, tall forest in Kome-machi where pine trees grew, always green and lush, and called this forest Aomori, which had been a target for fishing boats returning to the area since ancient times. Nobuhira was extremely pleased with the name, saying that it was a good name that would prosper for a long time, and the village was named Aomori Village.
Until then, this area had been a cold village called "Utoumura," but with the naming of this village, it developed remarkably as a port town under the prestige of the Tsugaru han and the leadership of Yashichiro.
Even today, Aomori City is home to a variety of maritime-related facilities, including ferry docks, the Hakkoudamaru, a former liner between Japan and the Pacific, and an oil terminal.
Living near the seaside, I sometimes wake up in the morning to the sound of a ship's whistle. When I go outside, I usually find that it is foggy, which means that the sound is the foghorn used to prevent maritime accidents.
When I asked my wife, who was born and raised in Aomori City, what symbolizes this port town, she replied, "I guess the ship's whistle.
The ultra-low-pitched "boooooo" sound must resonate with the heartstrings of anyone who hears it. And even more so when it is accompanied by the thick scent of the sea.
